Namegivers are those races that use language to bestow Names upon people, places and objects. In the core rules, these races are Dwarfs, Elves, Humans, Obsidimen, Orks, T’skrang, Trolls and Windlings. Dragons are considered Namegivers, but refer to themselves as Name-takers; they are not Named by their progenitors, but choose a Name as they come of age. There are rumours of other Namegivers in far off lands but none have been reported in Barsaive.

Naming something changes its pattern. The power to Name things alters the fundamental nature of what it is, and is therefore a powerful capacity.

Although many Horrors make us of language, they are not Namegivers. They are sometimes referred to as Name-eaters.

The eight races are playable in the core rules. Dragons are far beyond the means of what they call, “the young races” and are not a playable race.
